Professor of Genetics, University of Pennsylvania

Develops statistical and computational tools for understanding the genetic basis of diseases, with an emphasis on integrative genomics, heritability and population structure. He leads a team that developed machine learning methods to integrate epigenetic profiles within trans-ancestry studies to localize disease variants and genes.

Dr. Li has been elected as a Fellow of the American Statistical Association (ASA), a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) and a Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). His research focuses on developing statistical and computational methods for analysis of large-scale genetic, genomics and metagenomics data and theory on high dimensional statistics.

Dr. Sammut simultaneously pursues an academic and private sector careers. Academically, he has taught for over 30 years at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, as well as at numerous international universities where he has created and orchestrated health care management MBA programs. His teaching roster includes courses in private equity in emerging markets, venture capital, health care entrepreneurship and global health. His private sector activity spans 55 years but for the last 20 has focused on the role of the private sector in health care systems in the developing world.
